Printing & Converting

Graphic Packaging Incorporated

John McKeough, Plant Manager, GPI Cincinnati:

"I have used the product in two different plants for different applications and been highly satisfied in both cases.

The first situation demanded a solution for persistent (yet sporadic levels of) static. This was causing huge reductions in our sheeting output of composite/plastic materials, and further complicating our service performance due to lack of throughput reliability. The simple humidification solution brought immediate relief with no unexpected consequences.

A couple of years later, I faced a different challenge with converting paperboard cartons. In this case, ambient low humidity caused a significant (and again sporadic) level of cross-directional curl which caused large drops in throughput through our glue operation due to feeding issues. Again, the humidity solution was immediately effective, and came with no downside.

In each case, I experienced the improvements as desired, and also observed high equipment reliability, low maintenance cost, and relatively insignificant utilities cost. The best unintended benefit was to housekeeping. The misters dramatically reduce dust in the environment. I have picked up run hours and seen higher morale in both plants. Great product!"

Rock-Tenn, Folding Carton Division
(8 plants with ML System)

Linn Thomas, Director of Safety and Environmental Compliance:

"Dry air created a disastrous environment for manufacturing.
It caused a chain reaction that ran all the way from sheeting operation through printing die-cutting and finishing. We knew
that proper humidity would substantially eliminate the problems.
In the Milwaukee plant trip-offs are down from 50-60 per shift
to 6-8. Everyone is pleased with what they have seen and the
ML System has been simple and easy to maintain as we thought
it would be."

(3 plants with ML System installations)

Ken Rush, Chief Operating Officer

“We were bothered by quality and throughput problems involving dry air in winter: bowed stock, paper shrinkage, static electricity, trimming and die-cutting problems.  We’d tried other types of humidification, but they didn’t have the capacity or the consistent performance we needed. And they were expensive!

We’ve now installed ML Systems in 4 plants.  In every plant we’ve met or exceeded all of our goals for consistent humidity levels, quality improvement, reduced maintenance and energy costs.  Our investment payback has consistently been 2 years or less.”

Copy General Corporation
(the D.C. area’s largest independent all-digital printer)

Ken Chaletzky, president

“Our new state-of-the-art Xerox DocuColor iGen3 digital press requires a consistent humidity level so we can avoid reduced press speeds, breakdowns and paper waste.  We  installed 3 ML Solo units in our pressroom. The installed cost and maintenance costs were much lower than the alternative. And the energy costs were by far the lowest; just $0.22 a day.”

(a division of MasterBrand Cabinets, Inc.)
(nearly 4,000 kitchen cabinets a day)

Rob Galbreath, Electrical Controls Engineer

“We had a low-pressure compressed air system.  It used  up our
compressor capacity and it was expensive to operate and to maintain. It wasn’t easy to expand as our plant grew. We ended up with a system that was expensive to operate, wasn’t big enough to do the job and wasn’t everywhere we needed it.

We liked the simplicity of installing the ML systems, along with their low energy and maintenance costs. We knew it was a system that could grow as we grew.

From the beginning, our ML system has worked wonderfully.
It has done exactly what we had hoped for: it provides consistent in-plant humidity levels.  There’s been significant reduction in
our wood waste.  It’s meant improved operating efficiency and dropped money to our bottom line.”

Kolbe & Kolbe Millwork
(a leading manufacturer of wood and clad windows and doors)

Verlynn Oelke, Director of Engineering

“We sought to increase the dimensional stability of our wood products and wood parts by controlling humidity at a consistent level. We wanted to eliminate variations in size and moisture content so we could manufacture products with exacting tolerances that fit together precisely.

We’re not demanding. We just want a system that works perfectly, is easy to maintain and repair, solves our problems
and does the job with no muss, no fuss.

Once the new ML systems went in, our problems with dimensional stability, cracking and warping, bad joints and the rest went away fast.”
